The "Joint Lines" were formerly those of the Whitehaven, Cleator & Egremont Railway which was tranferred to the joint ownership and management of the London & North Western and Furness Railways in 1878. Signal boxes since that date were generally supplied by the L&NWR, but some earlier boxes remained
