Hi, I'm writing from Buenos Aires, Argentina. I enjoy very much your excelent collection. As I can see this tipe of signal it's very old, because there are some old photographs, circa 1860, showing a similar signal in the single line of the Buenos Ayres, La Boca and Ensenada Port Railway (B.A.B.& E.R)the third railway built in Argentina): two arms, one for each traffic direction, and the spectacle split from the arm. Regards, Pablo.

Location is Ravenglass rather than Dalegarth. The (at the time) Carriage Shed can be seen behind the Passenger Tractor while the locos are both standing north of the bridge over the main road into the village. The Tractor sits on the points to the siding where the weighbridge was, between the mainline and the engine shed.

Eliot Many thanks for your correction. I see looking closer that the locos are standing just north of the road underbridge at Ravenglass. Best regards Peter Robinson

Hello from Canada, I regret not having visited the branch when it was still operating. I have enjoyed looking at the selection of photos. The station at Coniston was most impressive for a small branch line. I shall look forward to the next selection of Cumbrian photos. Regards Mike.

Cpncerning the dating of the photo "Workington Central, old locoshed and signal box, 1952": this photo is also reproduced on page 18 of "The Track of the Ironmasters" (CRA 2004) and given the date May 1951. I'm sure both of these dates must be wrong since by this time all the Workington Central signals (apart from the Down distant) had become standard upper quadrant. I can just recall down quadrant down starter and up distant signals, possibly around 1944-46. I can't recall the tall up home as being down quadrant. I would think the photo is probably pre-WW2, as would be suggested by the lack of housing developement in the background, beyond the terrace known as Highfield. Peter Brady, Belmont Abbey, Hereford

Sorry, gents; this doesn't look quite right. Could this possibly be at Bullgill, on the M.& C? As I, remember Calva in the mid-'70s, the layout seems wrong. There isn't many railwaymen left, who worked either branch, even upon closure in '92, (for the junction at Calva; never mind Bullgill); but surely worth another look? Regards, Ian Marsh

This photo may cause confusion to people who remember Calva Junction in later years. The layout was completely re-modelled sometime after 1944{remodelling plan dated 15th June 1944}.The re-modelling consisted of the complete reversal of the junction{as a single lead junction}to lead in from the North. The crossover was moved a few yards North to become part of the new junction. The sidings and branch were also remodelled at the same time, does any one have the exact date?.
[#8776626] 2008-10-08 15:23:40 Left by Antony Graham (#1184970) Reply
I have found the junction re-modelling date,it was done during October 1944,the old junction being removed on the 22nd October 1944.

This photo is taken looking North on the Lakeside branch at the first crossing (not sure of the name)after the line has crossed the Leven. There is a large woods to the right of the track now and the two houses are still standing.

The location is south east of Blackrod on the L&Y main line. Only the L&YR section of the LMS planted small bushes so near its running lines and maintained them so well, especially in the area around Horwich Works. The chimneys, part of Horwich Works can be seen in the background

I know that everyone knows that this picture is of Oxenholme not Windermere but this comment is just so that someone prompts the webmaster to change the caption. Many thanks for presenting this set of pictures (of 'my railway' in 'my era') very much appreciated. I have bought some of these pictures from the CRA photo lists -additions to the web site may stop me from hasselling Steve Machell quite as much! What about couple more to make up for the location error above? WOR 196 45373 at Windermere and MAY 367C D377 at Kendal (to complement the one already posted)? Thanks Tony
